Australia’s Pilerats Records seem to have created a monopoly of insanely eclectic artists. Typically, I can listen to a track and compare it to similar artists or at least come up with some type of fictitious hyphenated genre to allow my brain to categorize appropriately. So far, everything I’ve listened to from this label seems to be beyond my mental capacity to comprehend. They’ve broken all the little boxes I’ve built, and it’s fantastic.
In a digital age when anyone can create, promote and distribute their own music, it’s inevitable to see an increase in artists trying to emulate the style of their favorite producer. These guys do the opposite. It’s like they threw every genre into a mixed bag and had the musicians pick three random ones. They’re fresh, innovative and exciting.
Time Pilot’s “Zulu” is a drum-circle beat turned trap banger. It possesses elements of world music and mystifying electronic production alike, proving that they’re ready to start trends, not follow them. Keep doing your thing guys, we’ll keep listening.
