POP / R&B “TRACKS OF THE WEEK”

This week’s POP / R&B “Tracks of the week” roundup features another minimalist production from Boots, a floor-filling dance track from songwriter Bebe Rexha, an Elton John cover from Miguel and Wale and a “We Made It” freestyle from Roc boys Jay Electronica and Jay Z.

Miguel & Wale – Bennie & The Jets (Elton John Cover)
You probably didn’t expect this, but it’s not nearly as bad as you may be thinking. Miguel and Wale take on Elton John’s “Bennie & The Jets” for the 40th anniversary re-release of John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The cover gets an update with woozy synths and Miguel singing over ethereal layered vocals before Wale comes in for a rap verse that isn’t half bad, but isn’t really needed, either.

Jay Electronica – We Made It Remix ft. Jay Z
Roc Nation artists Jay Electronica and Jay Z brag over Soulja Boy and Drake’s “We Made It.” After Electronica remembers his ancestors, Jay Z addresses Drake directly for his Rolling Stone comment. He then shouts out Hollywood’s favorite actress Lupita Nyong’o.

Bebe Rexha – I Can’t Stop Drinking About You
Bebe Reha has been making moves in the music industry for a while now, but the singer/songwriter just released her first solo single a few days ago. “I Can’t Stop Drinking About You” starts off with an acoustic guitar before escalating into a massive dance track with a clever hook, a knocking beat, pinging synths and plucked strings. As far as lead singles go,  it’s a pretty solid one.

Boots – Ride Ride Ride
Another week, another solid production from Boots. In fact, the sultry “Ride Ride Ride” may be my favorite release from the producer thus far. With a memorable hook, a Sia sample smack dab in the middle and a production that starts off minimalistic and builds in complexity as it progresses, this song features all of the elements that the newcomer has become known for.
