Broods – Free

I first fell in love with Broods upon discovering their infectious and prevalent electro-pop anthem “Bridges.” Though their sound is poppy, it’s got enough deep, buzzy bass and negative space to balance out the feathery vocals with heavier elements.

It’s been almost two years since we’ve heard from the New Zealand brother/sister duo, comprised of siblings Caleb and Georgia Nott. “Free” is our first taste of new material since 2014’s Evergreen, and it’s definitely an attention getting single.

The liberating track hits hard right out of the gate, with a higher dosage of feistiness than we’ve seen from the duo in the past. According to Broods, the upcoming album has guided them in a different musical direction, incorporating an industrial feel to their sound.

The accompanying music video is set in a dystopian world in which Georgia is held captive. It complement’s the song’s message. “If I lose it all, at least I’ll be free” she sings. A “Fight Club”-esque sentiment indeed. The new album Conscious is available June 24. Preorder it here.
