Venture Underground to The Wonderland Bar

The Wonderland Bar is a theatrical and imaginative pop up bar that is bringing curious cocktails and impossible happenings to The Vaults this summer. Having launched as part of the hugely successful Alice’s Adventures Underground, The Wonderland Bar is the perfect place to jump feet first down the rabbit hole and enjoy heady drinks and delicious pies, listen to live music and get lost in Alice’s world. Open to the public and not just theatregoers, The Wonderland Bar is ideal for both post-work drinks and late night parties.

Located in the enormous bespoke underground Wonderland and unlike anything in London at the moment, the bar is a separate world of discovery and delight. With its own cast and installations, the bar features a hedge maze, flamingo croquet, aerial acrobats and immersive theatrical performances. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 2am Wonderland Lates features live bands, DJs and live video mix mashup sets from Ithaca. This June and July sees live music from the likes of Tankus the Henge, The Thirst, Green Rock River Band.

With cocktails from Bourne & Hollingsworth, the drinks menu at Wonderland Bar has been influenced by Alice’s adventures and the numerous fantastical liquids she imbibes throughout the books. Although not being able to boast size-transformational qualities, the cocktails are nonetheless beautifully crafted and inventive enough to be worthy of any Mad Hatter’s tea party.

Cocktails from the menu include:
• Mead Feast £7.50 – Mead, Fresh Lemon Juice and Quince Jelly churned over Ice with Honey and Basil.
• Black Snapper* £7 -Gin, Tomato Juice, Fresh Lemon and House Spice mix, Shaken over Ice with Squid Ink and finished with Thyme *contains shellfish.
• Royal Rose £8 – Gin, Fresh Lemon and Rosehip Syrup, shaken with Ice and topped with Fizz.

At the bar’s adjoining ‘Pie Shop’, the experts at Pieminister have created a menu based on the memorable kitchen scene that involved babies turning into pigs, and a lot of pepper. Examples from the menu includes:
• Cook’s Piggie Pie (Definitely contains no children) – A free range British chicken & ham pie with leek & thyme.
• The Hungry Caterpillar (May contain mild hallucinogens) Pie (v) A wild mushroom, asparagus, white wine & cream pie.
• Off with Their Heads Pie– (V) – A topless butternut squash, feta & sun dried tomato pie.

Critically-acclaimed theatre company Les Enfants Terribles have combined forces with Emma Brünjes Productions to bring Wonderland to the Vaults of Waterloo. Three years in the planning, Alice’s Adventures Underground has brought Wonderland to life on a grand scale, blending storytelling, live music, circus and spectacle, along with a collection of fantastical puppets.
